It's been a bit since I posted about my travels (sorry about that but we've stopped for a bit of a break). I wanted to tell you about a way to save money if you're like me and wanting to explore the country a bit but would like to spend most of your money on trying new foods, pralines and having exciting excursions.
We quickly discovered how expensive it is to pay camping fees (an average of $25 to $60 per night). We decided to take a trip to Florida for about 4 weeks last spring and estimated that we would spend approximately $1800 on camping fees alone. We even checked on staying at just one park the entire time so we could take advantage of the monthly rate, but it was not much less. We looked into several ways to try to trim that expense and came across a campground membership group called Thousand Trails. We were able to purchase a camping pass for around $600 for a year and added another territory for around $300. So, for around $900 we were able to travel to Florida and stay without any additional camping fees. The only stipulation was that we could only stay for 4 days or less at each resort. We actually had wanted to move around the state so that worked for most of our trip. With our Thousand Trails membership we were able to stay up to 2 weeks at one resort but then we were forced to stay out of their system for a week which meant we had to pay to camp at another resort for a week somewhere. (Stays of 4 days or less are not counted in their system so we were able to use this way to go from park to park). This worked great for traveling around that first trip but it did get a little tedious having to move every four days. After a couple of trips we were presented with an opportunity to upgrade the membership so that we were able to book earlier, stay longer and go park-to-park instead of having to spend extra money being out of the system for a week. It seemed like a lot of money at the time but after breaking down expenses and estimating how much time we would be traveling (hopefully for years to come) we decided the cost would definitely save us money in the long run. Thousand Trails now has a new program which is even cheaper and a great value for those who know they're going to travel consistently. If you're interested in learning more about it see the attached picture. (This guy can answer any of your questions).
