Here's another one of my favorite small businesses I've recently discovered, Hemingway Hill. If you're near Terrell, Texas anytime soon and looking for something fun to do with kids (or anyone else) you should plan a visit to this flower farm. I found it online and decided to go check it out. Their tulip season was starting March 6th and I decided to go that weekend. The tulip window was only available for a short time, and I didn't want to miss it. I see they have since closed tulip season (March 16th) so plan for next year if you want tulips. As you will see they have other flower picking during the year, and lots of activities. They had snacks for the kiddos, a tent where you could sit in the shade and eat said snacks and just enjoy the tulip fields. They also have donuts on the weekends. Since I didn't go on the weekend I'll have to check those out next time.
The first thing I noticed as I approached the field was the smell. It smelled like a very fragrant flower shop. After winter, the smell was like a literal breath of fresh air. The flower field is on a quiet country road so it's very tranquil and relaxing. The fun part is that when you pick the tulips, they tell you to dig up the bulbs. The kids were loving this and truthfully, I did too. There are sticks throughout the field which you use to dig up the bulbs and you get to take them with you to plant at home. There are also benches at each end of the field for great photo opportunities. Meandering through the rows trying to decide which ones to pick was a great way to welcome spring.
One of the things you will see among the flowers in the field are the bees. The beekeeper happened to be helping out the day I was there and told me the bees pollinate the flowers. I did see a few but they were not overwhelming and quite cute.
After picking your flowers they make sure you are informed of how to take care of them and given a seed packet of flowers to plant at home. The owner is very informational, and it was a great experience. They were very friendly and welcoming, and it was a great spot to plan an excursion to get the kids outside. The bulbs they plant at home will give them years of memories.

Here is their card if you are interested in any more information:

They also offer classes and opportunities to learn about farming and taking care of the land. Please check them out.
