The art of cooking delicious biscuits in an omelet maker

Since I started traveling and living in a travel trailer a little over two years ago, I have discovered that it presents unique challenges to cooking. Since we don't have a huge, fancy traveling rig we do not have a huge amount of storage and prep areas. We have a few cooking appliances which we try to adapt for multiple uses. My traveling partner and significant other is REALLY fond of biscuits and gravy and making them has been a dilemma for me since we started traveling. Since we are stopped for a bit, I decided to make this a priority and really tackle the challenge and figure out how to make great biscuits to go with the gravy. We have discovered Libby's canned sausage gravy and I use this most of the time. Not only does it save time it also saves space since I don't have to keep milk and flour or cornstarch on hand. Plus, it's really delicious and saves a ton of time. Just as good as homemade. Now, back to the biscuits.

The travel trailer oven is small and since we are in the south most of the time and it gets hot in the summer, I try to refrain from using it. The couple of times I have tried to use it the biscuits have not come out appealing or completely successful. The burner is in the middle of the oven which makes cooking biscuits (or anything for that matter) a matter of checking frequently and moving the biscuits constantly and flipping them around. This method is not conducive to beautiful, golden, fluffy biscuits. Just the opposite in fact. So, I have taken it as my personal mission to figure out how to make beautiful biscuits without the oven. One of our cooking appliances is an electric frying pan. I have been trying to turn this into my somewhat small oven. I did manage to bake cookies in there (we'll save that for another post) but biscuits were a bit of a trick. That also will be another post. For now, we just want to get great biscuits in the omelet maker. Yes, I said an omelet maker. We obviously bought this for making omelets, but I think we can multi-purpose it today for a biscuit baker.

Let me present the biscuits:

These are frozen biscuits and obviously you can use whichever brand you prefer. These were the only ones available at my store at the time. I like to keep these in the freezer in the trailer because you just never know when you might get a hankering for biscuits. Next up - I think the next pic is self-explanatory.

Place 1 biscuit in each side of the omelet maker and close that lid.

At 7 minutes they were looking delicious on the bottom but the top was not looking so great so I decided to flip them.

And 14 minutes later - fabulous, golden biscuits. This worked great but it was time consuming to make the next two. If you were doing this for 1 or 2 people this is a great idea. However, if you have more than that to feed it would probably be too time consuming.

I hope this gives you an idea of how you can still have biscuits for breakfast, dinner or, just a snack, pretty quickly and easily. This would work great if you're a single traveler or maybe a couple and since most full hook up lots provide electricity it saves gas and keeps from heating up the rv. I hope you enjoyed this post. Next, we'll be trying to make biscuits in the electric frying pan (and more of them!). Let me know if you have other ways of cooking delicious biscuits while traveling. Have a great day!
